Got a Y62 Patrol Warrior?
Or thinking about upgrading one?
From factory, they’re a seriously capable bit of gear.
But once you start adding weight — towing, touring, barwork, drawers — that’s where the factory setup starts to show its limits.
And that’s where the right suspension setup makes all the difference.
🎥 Watch: Y62 Patrol Warrior Suspension Explained
The Reality of Factory Warrior Suspension
The Warrior comes with a variable rate coil from factory.
That means:
- Tight windings = softer ride
- Wider windings = firmer compression
It’s designed to be a good all-rounder straight out of the dealership.
And it works well — until you start adding load.
What Happens When You Add Weight?
Once you start adding:
- Rear drawers
- Rear bar
- Long range tank
- Caravan or trailer
- Touring gear
…the factory coils simply aren’t rated for it.
So what do most people do?
👉 They add airbags.
Airbags — What They Actually Do
Airbags are commonly used to assist the factory coils.
But there’s a key thing to understand:
👉 Airbags don’t increase ride height — they support the coil.
They:
- Add “substrate” to the coil
- Reduce how much the coil compresses
- Increase load carrying capacity
For example:
At around 60 PSI, airbags can add roughly 265kg of support
That’s why they’re so popular for towing setups.
The Problem With Relying on Airbags Alone
While airbags help — they’re not a complete solution.
You’re still relying on:
- A non-rated factory coil
- With large gaps in the windings
- Designed for general use, not heavy load
👉 So you’re essentially patching the problem — not fixing it properly.
The Right Way — Rated Coils
This is where upgraded suspension and lift kits come in.
At Enhanced Offroad, we recommend switching to rated coils designed for how your Patrol is actually used.
Options include:
0–120kg Rated
Best for:
- Minimal accessories
- Light touring setups
- Basic lift without heavy load
120–300kg Rated
Best for:
- Rear bar OR long range tank
- Moderate touring setups
- Occasional towing
Constant 300kg Rated
Best for:
- Rear bar + long range tank
- Fully loaded touring setups
- Consistent heavy weight
Popular Coil Options
We commonly use:
- Dash Offroad Samurai Coils – ideal direct replacement for Warrior coils
- Tough Dog Coils – strong, reliable alternative
Both offer:
- Proper load ratings
- Consistent performance
- Better control under load
Why Rated Coils Make a Huge Difference
Once you move to rated coils, you’ll notice:
- Improved ride stability
- Better load handling
- Reduced rear sag
- More consistent ride height
- Less reliance on airbags
👉 It’s a proper solution — not a workaround.
Setting Your Patrol Up Correctly
One of the most important things — especially when towing — is maintaining correct ride height.
Here’s how we do it:
- Measure from centre of wheel to guard (your baseline)
- Hook up your caravan or load
- Check how much the rear drops
- Adjust airbags if needed
- Aim to return to original ride height
Why Ride Height Matters
If your Patrol sits too low under load:
- You introduce negative camber
- Increase toe issues
- Scrub tyres on the inside
If it sits too high:
You affect handling and geometry
👉 The goal is simple: return to your original ride height.
Avoiding Tyre Wear
Incorrect setup leads to:
- Inner tyre wear (negative camber / toe issues)
- Outer tyre wear (positive camber / excessive toe)
And once tyre wear starts — it doesn’t fix itself.
Built for Real Patrol Use
The reality is, most Y62 Warriors aren’t staying stock.
They’re:
- Touring Australia
- Towing vans
- Loaded with gear
- Driven off-road
👉 And that requires a suspension setup that matches.
Upgrade It Properly
If you’re adding weight to your Patrol, don’t rely on factory coils alone.
Upgrade to:
- Rated coils
- Correct airbag setup
- Proper ride height
- Dialled-in alignment
